Somerset Door & Column Co. has been making wood columns for over 100 years. Crafted to the exacting “Orders of Architecture”, classic standard designs are available in sizes up to 40 inches in diameter and 40 feet in length. If a custom design is desired, scale drawings can be prepared for approval.
A classic Greek or Roman style column to enhance and beautify a home, retail store, commercial building or historic looking church sets the tone and offers structural support for a grand pediment or a simple front porch. Round, square, straight, tapered, and true entasis styles are available without fluting or with Ionic or Doric fluting.
All classic wood columns are available in a wide variety of the very finest seasoned wood, including African Mahogany, Clear Northern White Pine, Northeastern Sound Knotty Pine, Spanish Cedar, Walnut, Cypress, Poplar, Red or White Oak, Cherry, Maple and exotic wood species. All exterior columns and pilasters are primed with a premier quality wood primer and waterproofed on the inside with a special black asphalt waterproofing compound unless otherwise instructed.
Standard tongue and groove joints between staves are used in the manufacture of all Somerset columns. When wood columns are used to encase a steel or concrete support column, two tongue and groove joints directly across from each other are provided for gluing at the job site. This unique attachment method results in a secure joint with minimal chance of separation.
Where wood columns are used as pilasters, to cap a wall, inside or outside corner, a partial cut is provided at customer’s specifications with the final cut to be done at job site before installation. A partial cut is done to prevent the column from becoming dimensionally unstable and offer protection from damage during shipping.
The Somerset craftsmen are truly artists and take great pride in producing the finest column products possible. In fact, Somerset is so certain of this product quality and durability that it provides a one-year warranty on wood columns.
Hand Turned Wood Capitals & Bases
Our wood caps and bases are built to the Orders of Architecture but can be mixed and matched. Since wood capitals and bases are hand turned, we can produce nearly any design. This allows customization to almost any design for a one-of-a-kind look.
